Reading an official score report

How to read a GAI vs FSIQ gap

If you already have an official Wechsler report, the GAI versus Full Scale IQ gap is simply the subtraction of two printed official scores.

The calculation

Find the General Ability Index (GAI) and the Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) on your report. Subtract one printed score from the other, keeping the direction clear.

GAI − FSIQ = the score gap

A positive result means the printed GAI is higher. A negative result means the printed FSIQ is higher. This comparison uses scores you already have; you do not take another IQ test.

What the two scores include

GAI is built from verbal and perceptual reasoning composites. FSIQ includes those abilities as well as working memory and processing speed. A gap can therefore describe how the overall score changes when working memory and processing speed are included.

What the gap does not mean

The difference is not a diagnosis. It is one numerical comparison within an official report and should be read in its full assessment context.
